Open Water for Novices

As part of our committment to further the abilities of our less experienced members we will be running open water training for novices at Rother Valley when our Saturday morning swims kick off.

Your main coach for these sessions is to be Will Bealby. Will has successfully run these sessions for our less experienced open water swimmers and novices alike for a number of years. We expect that he will be assisted by other club coaches when necessary.

Attendance at these sessions will get you familiar with both the disciplines and skills necessary to approach OW swimming with confidence. You will learn how to navigate buoys, ‘sight’ for where to swim, swim in close proximity to other swimmers and find out how best to approach the ‘deep water’ start. Other topics that you can expect to cover will include transitions and drafting…yes it is legal in the swim and highly recommended.

Please be sure to say that you are there to attend the novice session when you register as this will give us an indication of how many to expect in the group.

(We are currently not planning to run these sessions during the midweek swims.)

A note on wetsuits: Mr Smooth of Swimsmooth has some useful info. in the video on this page. Click here
